How to Resize the Partition in Windows Operating System?

92

When you purchase the laptops from the market, it comes pre-loaded with an operating system and provides only one drive to share the data. This means you will get a single drive (C:\) when your OS is installed, and you can put the data on the same drive because no other drive is available on your laptop.

Usually, putting the data on Windows primary disk is not recommended, since if your OS gets corrupted, you have to do a lot of work in recovering the data. So, we should create more than 2 drives to keep the personal data separated from the Windows installation directory.

Till Windows XP, without third party software, re-sizing the partition was difficult, and one had to take the help of third-party software. Microsoft has started providing a built-in partition tool for Windows Vista and onward. If you are running Windows Vista, Win 7, Win 8, Win 8.1, or Windows 10, you can easily resize, create, or delete the existing partition.

How to resize the partition in Windows Vista or above OS

1. Right-click on This PC / Computer from the desktop and choose to manage.

Manage2. A computer management window will open. Click on Disk Management. It will list all virtual drives with their sizes available on your PC.

3. Here, there are 6 drives available in my case, and I will resize one partition (H:\).

4. Right-click on the partition/volume which you want to resize and choose shrink.

Shrink Volume5. Now, the Shrink window will open.

Shrink6. In the front of “Enter the amount of space to shrink in MB,” put the desired space in MB, which you want to reduce from the Volume. (In my instance, I am reducing 4,80,141 MB, so I leave it as it is). Click on Shrink.

7. It will create free space, which can be added to the later/previous drive or create a new partition.

Unallocated8. To create a new partition, right-click on the “Unallocated” space and choose “Simple New Volume…”.

New Simple Volume9. A window will open with the title, “New Simple Volume Wizard.”

New Simple Volume Wizard10. Now, follow the on-screen wizard, and it will create a new partition.

This process works with Windows Vista and later versions till Windows 10.

To resize the partition in a lower version than Windows Vista, you can use MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition for Free. A pro version is also available for free for only 4 days.
