Canonical and BQ Launch the BQ Aquaris E5 HD Ubuntu Edition Smartphone

Canonical and BQ have launched their first Ubuntu smartphone dubbed as BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition. The team is ready with its second Ubuntu-powered handset, the BQ Aquaris E5 HD Ubuntu Edition. The smartphone would be arriving in mid-June.

Canonical has promised that it’s BQ Aquaris E5 HD Ubuntu Edition will come with several improvements over its predecessor, the Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition.

The dual-SIM BQ Aquaris E5 HD, Ubuntu Edition smartphone features a 5-inch HD display powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek processor. It has built-in 16GB storage onboard that is further expandable with up to 32 GB of external MicroSD card.

The Aquaris E5 HD Ubuntu Edition houses a 13-megapixel AF rear camera with flash and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera for selfies. According to the firm, the device would only go on sale in Europe via BQ’s online store. It will be available unlocked in the market and priced at EUR 199.90 (roughly Rs. 12,770 / 223 USD). Notably, the predecessor Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition was launched for EUR 169.90 (about Rs 12,000 / $190).

Meizu – the Chinese smartphone maker may also launch an Ubuntu OS-powered phone, Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition, in the European region in mid-June, says Omgubuntu. If it is true, Meizu will be selling a device outside China for the first time. It is said to be priced at EUR 299.99 (appx Rs. 19,150 / $334).
